Farming 7 days a week leaves little time for musical treasure hunting or internet usage. In the interest of keeping both dreams alive, thistle have to do for now.
Unreal use of an Elliot Smith sample. Thank you, Margot.
If you're in the area (NJ), Deaner is hosting a benefit show next Wednesday the 28th at The Saint for his friend Nick. Thanks to the dude at Local Smoke BBQ for the info.
Woods - "Bend Beyond"
These guys from Brooklyn have been pegged as an "american-folk band", but I couldn't imagine a more inaccurate description. Just flowing, kaleidoscopic rock.
Today is Wednesday, and also the end of a great internship with the Northeast Organic Farming Association.
95 Royale hails from the land down under, specifically Brisbane, and offers some loopy discoux goodness.
I was just introduced to Kid Koala via reddit, and his turntable skills are damn fine. Like Birdy Nam Nam, but with two less people and just as many worldly samples. Plus, he currently plays in a Koala suit because he lost a bet to his manager. He and DJ Shadow did this collaboration on Bombay 2: Electric Vindaloo, which featured artists from around the world with the running theme that all samples be from Indian films. If you like this, check out his live interpretation of "Moon River".
Lastly, Nicolas Jaar should be a lot more well known than he is right now. Besides the music, his commentary on music and dance culture is refreshing, and reminds me of shit Aphex Twin used to talk about with IDM.
Get his BBC Essential Mix, and see how his 5-hour set at MoMA PS1 went.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone have consistently been responsible for some of the funniest animations (and one broadway play) over the last decade, but in 2007 they also started a lesser known production company, FurryCarlos Productions, that they've been using to animate old archived recordings of Alan Watts. Trey Parker was taught Zen Buddhism as a kid and these are a sort of homage to Watts. Read the 2006 interview from Reason and watch the animations over here.
Mississippi John Hurt is great.
Bob Weir & The Roots played a benefit for Headcount this past weekend, and were joined by Grace Potter, Warren Haynes and Trey Pistachio. The first set is solo acoustic by Weir, and the rest of the show is an awesome medley of super jams, Pish covers, and a "Whipping Post" encore. Thank you to The Barn Presents for hosting.
Lastly, if you're in western Mass next weekend and want to hit up a festival with Trampled by Turtles, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Devil Makes Three, David Grisman, Tony Rice, and the Infamous Stringdusters for only TWENTY SIX DOLLARS, you should head over to MassMOCA's Freshgrass Festival.
It's 'gon be great. FreshGrass Bluegrass Festival
It's been years in the making, but NJ heroes Streetlight Manifesto have finally announced a fall tour for their upcoming DOUBLE album, The Hand That Thieve / The Hand That Thieves, which will be mixed with one part Streetlight and one part Toh Kay. You can preorder it now at the RISC store so you can listen to it on Nov 6th. The tour runs from Oct 16th - Dec 7th and hits pretty much every major city in the country.
Minus The Bear's Infinity Overhead came out today, and is accompanied by a fall tour similar to Streetlight's, starting on Sept 10th and running till Nov 17th. Judging by the sound of "Diamond Lightning", it will be more like Menos el Oso and less like Omni. Hopefully?
There isn't enough time in a week for good movies and music, here's a playlist of the best blues/folk/grass/non-electronic business that's been coming through the speakers.
I was introduced to these guys while on a climbing trip in Nova Scotia. Awesome songwriting and folk-punking from Edmonton. I bet their shows are unbeatable. No download- just buy the whole album, it's great.
Taj Mahal & Etta Baker - "Railroad Bill"
This is currently my favorite traditional song. Etta Baker was one of the most influential female pickers, but Crooked Still does a great job with the vocals.
Chuck Magid - "Butterfly"
Straight from the 407 is Mr. Magid, of Elechronic fame, and this is his newest song and video featuring Kevin Tate and dedicated to Keeley. Nothing but good vibes and good music.
Really, though- being happy is the key to life.
The only thing I like more than electronic is grass, and after Electric Forest a more relaxed and music-oriented festival was desperately needed. Grey Fox has been happening for years (approximately 30), and before that it was called the Winterhawk Festival. In it's current form, Grey Fox offers the creme de la creme of bluegrass on a scenic farm up in the Catskills. Literally everyone who you'd want to see, all in one weekend. I never thought I'd see David Grisman live, let alone with a jazz sextet, or that I'd meet Del McCoury and the banjo player from Crooked Still. This is truly one of the best festivals I've ever been to, in terms of the music and the community. Also, go see Della Mae whenever you can.
All images are from good friend David Lee, aka Gypsyshooter. Look for him at a festival near you!
STS9 has become one of my favorite live acts to see on the festival circuit, but only recently did someone give me a copy of their acoustic show at Hornings Hideout. These guys are insanely talented and involved in some neat extracurricular activities like scoring the documentary #ReGeneration, which focuses on the Occupy movement and current youth culture.
On making the album, and the 2009 show, "In December of 2009, STS9 sat down in one of America’s most pristine
modern opera houses on a chilly night in Denver, CO to create the
inaugural 'Axe The Cables… An Evening of STS9'. What this night
encompasses is one of, if not the most flawless STS9 event in the bands
decade plus history. The entire show was played, for the most part, sans
all “electric” gear including the common stage instrumentation of
laptops our fans have grown quite accustomed to. To say the event was a
hit is an understatement. It was a night legends are made of. So much so
the band has decided to re-cut, re-mix, and re-master this into one
massive release." - STS9
STS9 at Blackwater Festival in Florida, doing a not-at-all acoustic set.
It's been almost 3 years since Farm, but thankfully Mascis/Lou/Murph are putting out more beers for your ears. This is from their upcoming 10th studio album, I Bet On Sky, set to be released on September 18th (or the 17th if you're across the pond).
P.S If you've ever wondered who's responsible for the epic cover art for I Bet On Sky, it's Travis Millard. And on Farm and Several Shades of Why? It's the same dude who does much of the art for Dogfish Head Brewery's limited release beers. Cheers, Marq Spusta.
Just Jack released a home recorded lo-fi EP, Rough/Ready, with 4 songs of kushy goodness, Fight Club samples, and acoustic noodling. It's really hard to tack on a genre, but he's somewhere between hiphop and ambient pop. Give it a shot, you won't.
In honor of Jerry's 70th birthday, movies theatres around the country are playing the Grateful Dead Movie in it's entirety, for one night only, on August 1st at 7:00 PM. The show will also include a special interview with Jason Kruetzman and a tour of TRI Studio. Here's a list of all the theatres in the country that are down with the Dead.
After playing Electric Forest this past weekend, Mississippi's own Zoogma presented their "Wet Hot American Mixtape", which wins the Best Mixtape Title award. Lot's of glitchy samples, dubby instrumentals and hard drums, this is a 4-song dance party.
Lastly, AmpLive remixes The Submarines "1940", and it's great.
Chumbawumba broke up yesterday. They were a band for 2 years less than the Beatles. Here's an incomplete collection of the live sets from Electric Forest, along with some visuals and video captured over the long, weird weekend. There will be more sets to come, as soon as slow tapers upload them.

The first 8 minutes of Bassnectar's set, opening with "Colorstorm" into "Pocket full of Hydro"
In preparation for Electric Forest, I am making CDs for the car that will contain several things. A) Follow Me's new track, B) the duo's exclusive set for PB&JRadio which is the grooviest shit, C) A great version of "Goin' Down The Road" with Mydland from '89. If you're not familiar with Follow Me, they describe the Summer Nights mix here,
"Perfect for any Summer Night/Moon Dance/Tribal Gathering/Psychedelic Journey
If you hear your vibes it means you will be coming with us to the
other dimension after the 2012 Cosmic Rebirth. Congrats to all the
Psychonauts who made the first cut, more selections to come leading up
the December 21st galactic ascension so if your tryna get that Third Eye
opened permanently you best get to your synths before its too late!!"
De La Soul's Plug 1 & Plug 2 are now based in Paris and have transformed into First Serve, setting funk phazers to full blast. "Must B The Music" is the first single along with the Goon Time Mixtape, which you can download for free while looking at their tumblr, which is a treasure chest of great random shit.
"In the unusually warm 3am air of a Parisian suburb, a house party is getting out of control. Police Nationale have been called - but no-one can get near. The air is thick with Hip-Hop filling the adjacent streets, acting like a force field.... The cause for celebration? It’s the wrap up party for First Serve, an undercoverproject that has been two years in the making. First Serve is the brainchild of 2 & 4 (aka Chokolate & Khalid, producers/ DJ’s). After an instant meeting of minds they decided to embark on a musical adventure – a Hip Hop album played by musicians. All they needed was a couple of MC’s to help complete their vision. Enter NY based Jacob ‘Pop’ Life and Deen ‘D’ Whitter.
Listen to the mixtape recorded at the party. It’s funky, it’s hip hop, it’s disco... and it’s a classic!"
Last Thursday was orientation at Camp Weld, a month-long celebration of the better things in life. Someone hired three Traktor S4 escorts for the weekend, and things got pretty steamy. The summer solstice is in three days, Electric Forest is in 9, and Grey Fox is in 2 weeks; good things are coming.
Here's the Lost Summer Tape, the official day drinking playlist of Camp Weld, along with the winner of the Electric Forest "Mix and Match" competition. Also featured is a trip-hop track by Mister Tweeks, which Flosstradomus played in his most recent Diplo & Friends broadcast on BBC1.
And last but not least, Danny Brown, the newest and oddest addition to the Fools Gold family.

I've been listening to Here on repeat since I bought it yesterday morning, and 9 tracks is just not enough. But Little Daylight has temporarily resolved this issue with a supplemental addition to the album. Inspired Flight also released a remix this morning, collaborating with Scarub of Living Legends fame, to mix Beats Antique's "Cat Skillz". Drop Out Orchestra also just dropped their June 2012 Mix.
Live for the funk, Die for the funk.
Sigur Rós has announced a Mystery Film Experiment, and will release one music video for each track on Valtari every week or so following the album's US release date. Check out the first video for "Ég anda'", and keep an eye out for the rest of them on the Valtari videos page. Also, if it helps at all, "Ég anda'" translates into "I breathe".
Yeah fuck Yeah! Jackson drops his Swim/Suit 4 mix, DOO makes more disco, Dirty South releases a jam-packed Phazing Radio, and STS9 goes acoustic for a full set.
This is my new favorite venue in NJ. Unbeatable beer selection, solid guacamole, and Zach Deputy for $10. We missed the opener, Ghost Head, and probably a few songs from Zach's short set, but the rest of the show was funky.
Check out the video of "Into the Morning", and grab the SBD for some smooth, smooth grooves.
RAC has been on the ball lately. Here is their newest bit of work, a remix of Princeton's "Grand Rapids" released this morning, as well as The Magician's minimalist take on RAC's first single "Hollywood".
Has officially started, which means more music and less work. Dope new Dirty Heads songs from the upcoming album 'Cabin By the Sea', out on June 19th, two bluegrass covers of Misfits songs, and the newest Summer Mix by Chris Weld.
This morning, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed away. MCA was only 49 years old, but his impact on music will last at least that long. He was a founding member, and also started Oscilloscope Laboratories, a truly independent film distribution company that's given voice to some great directors and producers.
Earlier in the week, NYC-DJ Mick Boogie put together a mix tape in honor of their induction in to the Rock N' Roll hall of fame, and will be collaborating on a t-shirt with Homage, and all proceeds going towards the charities that MCA supported. A timely tribute.
Louie Armstrong remixed, Nujabe's "Luv (sic) 1-5", amphetamines, a live Mickey Moonlight mix, geographic imaging systems, Aeroplane's April mix, and environmental economics.
Art courtesty of BRUTE!
Here's a huge remix of "The Wave", done justice by Thomas Gold. It's ripped off of Pete Tong's show, so the quality isn't great, but it should be on Beatport soon. Also, Dirty South's take on "Devil's Work". The remixes off of Happy to You have been absolutely unreal so far.
"I'm talking quietly so I won't wake myself up..."
This is a new mixtape from The Avalanches, courtesy of their youtube channel. The man responsible is Bukowski's alter-ego, Henry Chinaski. Thank you to Pinchy & Friends for this, and check Clash for rumours on the new album.
In preparation for the beginning of my last exam week, Ed Banger just offered up Busy Pedro's mix from HARD 2012, recorded live at Grand Central. The first 15 minutes of the show are in HD below.
If you're in the greater Winter Park area, it's gonna be a good one. A) Sam Sparro is playing at the Social on Friday, 17th. B) The 7th Annual Jambando Festival is free and at the Plaza Theatre this Saturday, and C) Saturday night at Tanqueray's is the RJ Harmon & Co. CD release party, which is also free.
If you like food trucks, good beer and listening to people play instruments- Saturday is your day.
Celebrate by streaming Groove Cereal's first E.P before it's release on May 17th- it comes with a side of fresh Dead-Mow-5, titled "The Veldt". This will be on repeat all night.
BBCRadio1 just played Treasure Fingers great new remix of Ladyhawke's "Black, White & Blue", Theophilus London teams up with A$AP Rocky, Bart B More remixes "Paddling Out", and Bill Murray takes the boat out with Dr. Gonzo. Not a bad afternoon.
NY-Native dBerrie opened Cosmic Opera a few weeks ago. I enjoy his live mixes much more than his remixes, and this one is strung together perfectly. A great soundtrack to an hour of CoD on a rainy, day-drinking afternoon. Also, I highly suggest downloading it before the limit runs out.

This past saturday, Rollins College hosted WPRK's 60th Anniversary party. The station is central Florida's oldest in basement radio, and just recently got it's license renewed after a lame FCC battle, and managed to get the funding to keep on playing the beats. So there was much cause for celebration, and some of Florida's best bands were jamming on the lawn.
Plus, Shipyard Brewery set up a keg on the lawn and we got $5 Export Ale's alllll day long.
Hundred Waters These guys occupy a really cool space somewhere between traditional folk music and electronica. Synth-folk? They have beautiful voices and simple percussion, it's easy to get hooked. Listen to the whole album for free above.
Laney Jones Is apparently a Rollins student, and she plays an excellent Banjo. She played at Bonaroo this year, as well.
Yip-Yip By far the most interesting band to play the festival was Yip-Yip. I felt like I was coming down from something for their whole set- it was very confusing, but I still liked it. The duo plays a shitload of analog synths and things I couldn't identify, as well as sometimes a saxophone. I heard from an inside source that they really like pizza, which would have only sort of explained the costumes.
Beebs & Her Money Makers I saw these guys & gal open for Galactic a few months ago and was blown away at how awesome they were. Jazz-funk-ska-dance-hip-hop that won't let you stop moving.
We'll make this simple. Send me a picture or video of you getting down at an EOTO show, and in exchange you will be entered to win A FREE TICKET to the Athens, GA show on April 6th.
That's right, it is that easy. (If you don't have a picture or video of yourself, you may submit a very good reason.)
RULES: Send to theskatemonkey@hotmail.com with title "EOTO CONTEST". Please include your full name, your hometown, and a reference photo of yourself so I know you didn't just pull some shit off of google (if you're submitting an image). Contestants will be evaluated by a panel of judges to conclude who is most fit to attend the April 6th show. There can only be two winners, and they will be announced by 9 PM on Thursday the 5th.
Heck yeah! Just in time for the sunny days, Edward Sharpe and his gang released this single from their upcoming album, 'Here', out May 29th. I had somehow forgotten how much I liked them, but now I remember perfectly.
