Phish - "The Bluegrass Sessions (A Documentary)"

And now for something completely different. Nothing tickles my pickle like a good documentary. Back in 1994 Phish teamed up with Jeff Mosier of Bluegrass Undergrass, hiring him as a mobile bluegrass mentor for the remainder of their tour. Someone was smart enough to grab a video camera before the bus hit the road, and this was the result. I have no idea when this video was unearthed or released, but it's strictly for free thanks to Rev. Mosier and can be watched consecutively in 9 parts on youtube right here. This is 180 minutes of awesomeness.

I never thought I'd see Fishman pick up a mandolin, or hear Phish do "Rolling in My Sweet Baby's Arms", but lo and behold...

DJ Shadow - "Blood On The Motorway"

This is an older song off of Private Press. After listening to the Contact mix below this was the next logical jump my brain made while staring at the itunes folder. This is a dope song, but DJ Shadow is best enjoyed from beginning to end, so I highly suggest you just go out and get any one of his albums.

"Breathe deeply. Breathe in the healing love
of the universe, and breathe out the sickness
which has taken you. I am with you."

DJ Shadow - "Dolphins Were Monkeys"

Fisk - TreeThugger - Contact Mixtape

Dubby wild and weird sounds from Colorado native Fisk. When he's not playing alongside Ben Samples, as Fresh2Death, Fisk makes epic experimental sets and plenty of original songs. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, it sounds like DJ Shadow spent a night with B.I.G and EOTO. Check the Soundcloud for a complete track listing if you're into it. This is 30 minutes well spent, keep your ears wide open. Thanks to a brother at PB&J for the heads up.

Railroad Earth - "Across the Universe" & "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo"

Cool beans!

Elechronic - "Splash Zone Special"

More splendid funky shit from Winter Park natives Elechronic. If you liked "Rome", then you'll like this a lot. Dig it.

The Most Naive of Melodies

The Talking Heads are one of the best bands to have ever graced our collective eardrums. Many have attempted to cover their songs, specifically "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)", most doing super shitty jobs, while a select few have done the song justice and given it a new life of it's own.

1) Miles Fisher- This is hands down the most creative and well done video and re-make of a song I've seen. Writer, actor, musician, Christian Bale clone, dude's got it all.

2) String Cheese Incident - This was from Rothbury 09', aka The Comeback Incident. The spacey bluegrass jam in the middle is a nice addition.

3) Cornmeal - A true bluegrass cover

4) Arcade Fire - Ultra perfectionists, they even went as far as having each person play an unfamiliar instrument for the cover. (Byrne named the song "Naive Melody" for that reason originally. Each member of the Talking Heads swapped instruments when playing this song to give it an unpolished feel.)

Now go watch Stop Making Sense.

Noise[Org] & Big Gigantic

Yet another epic show at The Social this past Sunday, featuring one Big Gigantic and one Noise[Org]. The night was a colorful swirl of sights and sounds, but I do remember a) wishing that Noise[Org] would play longer and b) wishing that Big Gigantic would just play forever. Check out the videos from the show below featuring a killer cover of "Black & Yellow", and grab Noise[Org]'s latest release for some delicious funky goodness.

Bibio - "Lovers Carvings (Cat n Dogz re-edit)"

Great remix from Cats n Dogz, previously known as 3 Channels, courtesy of the brothers over at PB&J. I heard this the other night on a friends mix and I couldn't get it out of my head. Download it here and then head over to check out PB&J's Ten Track Tuesday compilation with BroBible.

The Movement - "Habit" & "Set Sail"

These guys opened for SOJA last year in Orlando, they put on a high-energy show and played some awesome tunes. Some good music for good weather.

Clive Tanaka y su Orquesta - "Neu Chicago"

Airy, ambient electro-pop from Japan. It's catchy in the best way, and makes me want to know more about Mr. Tanaka and his orquesta.

Bon Iver - "Skinny Love (Das Kapital Rerub)"

I'm not even going to bother writing any sort of description or review, just listen to it right now, reading this will only waste time that could be better spent listening to this on repeat.

Kid Kapital hails from Capetown, South Africa and has done some truly awesome mixes and reworks of songs from the likes of Justice, DJ Fresh, and even Dada Life . Check out his soundcloud below for the goods.

Are You Shpongled?

I've realized that not many people listen to Shpongle, or if they do, they do it at home with the lights off and don't tell their friends or family. Which is probably okay, because that really is how you should do it. Shpongle blossomed out of a solar eclipse in India that Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) and Raja Ram witnessed together. Upon their return to the U.K, the duo entered the studio with the hopes of recreating their experience in musical form. Naturally. According to Wiki, 'shpongle' is not a recognized word in any language, and is simply a term used to describe euphoria by one Raja Ram. They're live shows are like nothing I've ever seen, and I won't even attempt to describe the things I saw or did there, but I do highly recommend you make the journey at somepoint. Here's an introduction to the insanity, enter "Outer Shpongolia".

If that did the trick, then here's a personal favorite from the stash. Mystery of The Yeti is another one of Raja/Simon's numerous side projects. Best listened to at max volume, surround sound.

Yelle - "Safari Disco Club"

Safaris, discos, french pop, clubs... That's pretty much it. Throw in some silly xylophone-sounding synth burps and a few choice animal sounds, you've got yourself about four and a half minutes worth of "Safari Disco Club". It's Yelle's first single of 2011 and is generously offered for a free below, it's pretty sweet.

Morning Parade - "Under the Stars"

It's awesome when a song can surprise you. Just when you think you've got it pigeon-holed, it morphs into something entirely different and equally good. Such is the case with Morning Parade's "Under The Stars". It's smorgasbord of different influences and styles, but it comes together perfectly. Thanks so much to Oh My Rock! for the linkage.

Elechronic - "Rome"

Elechronic, formerly known as 'You, Me & Z', at least for one night, is made up of Winter Park favorites Chuck Magid and fellow amigo / keyboardist Ryan West. As of two days ago, the duo has regrettably relocated to Vail from Winter Park for a change of scenery, and will hopefully continue to make funky party jams until the end of time. They'll be playing shows there soon, so check your local listings if you're out in the area folks.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad - "Sunshine Dub"

After having seen them once at Nateva Festival, and been given their album by two separate people, it took me long enough to realize how awesome these dudes were, or that dub is appropriate for all occasions. This is from their album "Slow Down", it sounds like you're rolling in France on a sunny afternoon, and it should be listened to on repeat, again and again. The entire album is good, so no download for this one, just snag it on itunes if it tickles your fancy.

Rainbow Arabia - "Without You"

This is one of the first released tracks off Rainbow Arabia's upcoming album Boys and Diamonds. It reminds me of something I can't put my finger on, but the intro is super catchy, the congos/bongos go swimmingly with the synth, and this girls voice is great. Ch-ch-ch-ch-eck it out

Craft Spells - "Party Talk"

After a 20 hour drive from NJ-FL and enough adderol and nicotine to kill an elephant, it's back to school, back to school. Craft Spells are a relatively new outfit from California, and just recently got on the Captured Tracks label. It's hard to believe their lead singer is not Morrisey, but I guess I'll have to trust their website. If you like the chill vibes then check out their blog and myspace, as well as the video for this other great song below, "You Should Close The Door". enjoy and relax.

Phish - "Meatstick > Auld Lang Syne > After Midnight"

Holy shit I almost forgot the other night was the great time of yearly transition. I doubt many people who read this have any interest in Phish, but fuck it they're great and you should. Their New Years eve gig at MSG was by far the best show I've seen in a while. It could have been the tabs, the moon rocks, or all the champagne we managed to sneak in, but everything just seemed to fall into place for a perfect night. Viva 2011!

Trinity F.M - "S.O.S (Sound Of Silence)"

I think there are certain songs that will always sound good, no matter how they're cut and chopped. This is a simple remix of Simon and Garfunkel's classic, "Sound Of Silence". There aren't any huge changes, just a nice beat and some extra synth. Thanks to the gentlemen at EMPT for a good song to start off the day.
