Same!

Someone I've never met before just sent me an electronic mail on the internet to share some music and kind words, and it reminded me that there is literally nothing better in the world than music (especially the mix by Bloes Brothers- thank you).  It brings people together, and more or less makes the world go 'round.

Friends, rodents, quadrupeds, lend me your rears

Grey Fox 2013

Summer is bluegrass, festivals, and ideally bluegrass festivals.  My second Grey Fox yielded some of the highest musical moments of the year, and reminded me why it's important to try and catalogue all of these notes and sounds.  There is too much good music happening all the time- it's hard to keep track of all this shit- and at the very least, this thing will serve as a personal reminder of what I've been fortunate enough to hear and see.  In no particular order of importance or awesomeness, they follow.
Watermarked images are from Gypsyshooter, check 'em out.

The trio had the (pre)headlining spot on Thursday night and played every song imaginable, including a handful of new material. Unfortunately, coffeewhiskey, and there isn't any video or audio or images.

The Infamous Stringdusters
Covering Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and Sting's "Walking on the Moon", and ending with a ripping version of "Black Rock".  Look no further than this song for evidence that Andy Hall is the definitive dobro master.

Representing Winter Park! It was awesome to see these guys here, and although they are back in Florida now, look for them in a city near you!

Keller Williams & the Travelin' McCourys
Their late-set cover of Modest Mouse's "Float On" flowed into "Freaker"- and it beats out Iron Horse's- making this the unexpected highlight of the set.

I certainly can't provide the most eloquent description of a show, but I can always dig up the audio so you can hear for yourself, which is really much better.  See ya next year!

Vernal Equinot

Once every four months feels about right.  There hasn't been much opportunity to strain the dregs of the e-ther for interesting sounds, so the ipod has been on full shuffle for weeks now.  This is a collection of what's popped up and what's been shared.

Cousin Cole - "Slumberland"
"A mix for being home alone awake at 3am or so."  Or up at 5 on a roof in Florida.  Check out Cole's soundcloud for take's on the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Rhye, Kendrick Lamar, and even R Kelly.

Jason Molina's death a few weeks ago spurred me to listen to his work, if for no other reason than morbid curiosity.  This song instantly clicked, and I haven't been able to take it off repeat.

"The real truth about it, is that no one gets it right
The real truth about it, we're all supposed to try"

Sangano - "Cycle"
Sangano existed for a few short years in the late 90's-early 00's, which is a damn shame.  They did the soundtrack for Masters of Stone V, a righteous late 80's climbing movie, 200% worth checking out.  But, Sangano is on par with RHCP here, especially on that bass.  They keep it tight, blending funk, latin and soul seamlessly.

Matthew Herbert - "It's Only (DJ Koze remix)"
Auditory crack,  needs to be listened to in an open room with a good system.

Phish - "Roses are Free > 'Island Jam' "
I've been blessed with a few boxes of tapes, mostly '98-'99 and some spring '72 Dead.  The 4-3-98 show at Nassau is notable in many ways, but mostly because I couldn't have picked a better setlist myself.  The first set Mike's opener into Weekapaug, split in half by My Old Home Place is great, and the jazzy breakdown in the first set Reba is unbelievable... but the "Roses > Jam > Piper > Jam > Loving Cup" ?
Simply overwhelming.
Watch the whole show here, and then download it here, and then remember why you love Trey, and then we'll see each other on eastcoast summer terr.

Until The Light Takes Us

Is an unbelievable documentary about Norwegian black metal, even if you're not into that sort of thing.  New year means new music, along with the goal of absorbing at least one unfamiliar artist / song daily.  The collection follows, spanning from contemporary acoustic to bluegrass to minimal-ish, containing songs stolen or borrowed from several different people and places.

This past weekend, The Bela Fleck Banjo Summit offered the bee's knees of stringed sounds. Noam Pikelny, Richie Stearns, Tony Triska (to name a few) and a guitarist named Russ Barenberg all played together and showcased the banjer.  This is one of Russ'originals, a celtically-informed fiddle tune called "Through the Gate".

Jamie xx is too good.

Fruition is a band form Portland, OR and The Bellboys and The Villians are playing with them in this video, all of whom I was introduced to via Davey Jones via the SCI parking lot during Winter Carnival last year. The girl playing the mando kills it, also check out their version of John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery".

Lusine is a texas based musician on Ghostly International.  This track is off of his upcoming album, The Waiting Room, which is out tomorrow.  Remix by a norwegian fellow named Hanssen
