The O'Jays - "Back Stabbers (Drop Out Orchestra Edit)"

Another great funk track form the busy Swedes, Drop Out Orchestra.
In their own words, " 'Back Stabbers' is one of the best songs ever made. We added some strings, guitars, bass, percussion and a new beat under The O'Jays. Hope you like it." - DOO

Arno Cost - Live @ Tomorrowland 2011

Muchas gracias to PB&J's NBV for sending this my way. Arno Cost is an up-and-coming Producer / DJ from Paris who played the first day of Belgium's Tommorowland Festival this past summer. This is progressive house at it's finest, and the intro sample is especially awesome.

12.05.2011

La Tourette - "Check My Beat (Original Mix)"

La Tourette sends some aggressive electro from across the pond, complete with a bit o' driving bass and vocals by what is most likely a Transformer.

12.04.2011

Clams Casino - "I'm God" & "Motivation"

In my mind, the fact that Clams Casino is from Nutley, NJ almost completley makes up for the existence of the Real Housewives and the cast of Jersey Shore. Coming from obscurity, he's made beats for a variety of rappers I usually don't listen to (Lil' B, Souljah Boy), but his production and style are too unique to pass up. Syrupy heavy bass, floating vocals, tribal-esque drums- all wrapped up in a dreamlike haze. These two instrumental tracks are enough to cause relaxation during even the most extreme of amphetamine-fueled studying binges.
Thank you Nat Attack, and you're welcome exams.

The Fungle Brothers - "Biggy Biggy Bigstyle Mix"

The Notorious and electro-swing? Swing-hop? Some say nay, I say sway. This is truly awesome stuff. The Fungle Brothers are from Hatfield, they make a mean mix, and have a diverse array of influences such as:

"Dancing, Mushrooms and other members of the fungi family, Archery, Fishing for frogs, Amateur Mechanics, Swings down the park, Lamppost ID number collecting."

So far this is the only thing on their soundcloud, but I'm eagerly awaiting the next batch of tunes.

The Opiates - "Reality T.V (Drop Out Orchestra Dub)"

Billie Ray Martin and The Opiates were kind enough to send me this track a little while ago, and I've been stoked about sharing it since. Billie Ray is a soul singer turned DJ from Hamburg, who just recently formed The Opiates with Robert Solheim and released 'Hollywood Under The Knife'. I can't get enough Drop Out Orchestra, and there's some more solid, shiny sounds in here. In her own words, "a very special booty shaker from drop out orchestra from the forthcoming remix album by THE OPIATES."
Also check out her live DJ set from this past summer, below.

Trey Winter Symphony Tour 2012

'Tis the season to be TRAAAAAAY. The Red-Haired Kris Kringle just announced his Winter Symphony Tour, which stops in Atlanta (2/9), Pittsburgh (2/14), Denver (2/28) and Los Angeles (3/10), playing with the local symphony in each city.
If you're wondering what this will sound like, check out the Trey's free hometown set from LivePhish with the Scorchio Orchestra.

Les Claypool's Frog Brigade - "Dogs"

Besides the unquestionably flawless documentary Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo, I've never liked Les Claypool or Primus. I unwittingly went to their set at Rothbury and they scared the shit out of me. However, Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade have changed my mind. This is off of Live Frogs Set 2, which is Floyd's Animals album covered in it's entirety, described by Claypool himself as "more Pink Floyd than any human being should ever withstand."
Celebrate the entire collection below.

Yonder's Cabin Fever Tour 2012

This past Friday, Jeff Austin & Co announced their Cabin Fever tour for 2012. Gulf state residents, mid-westerners and southerners rejoice, for February 8th marks the beginning of the 20-show Yonder Bender. The tour includes a 5 night stop in Flo-rida, with their annual Orlando appearance on February 16th. Unfortunately they've switched to a larger venue (The Beacham, as opposed to The Social), but oh well.

Some choice highlights from last year's cover-heavy show at The Social. Jeff's rant at the end of "Steam Powered Aeroplane" is worth the download alone, as are the jams during "Come Together" and "I Am The Slime".

RAC - Mixtapes

It's been a great week for music. The Misfits killed it this past Thursday night at the Plaza Theatre, Boombox spun the funk on Saturday night in downtown Orlando, and Florida's own Flat Mountain Boys played a great set today at the Winter Park Harvest Festival. To round all that off is some good lovin' from the Remix Artist Collective, three new mixtapes.
It's the Lazy Sunday mix FTW.

Body Language - "Holiday (RAC Remix)"

Huzzah! RAC just released their official remix of the Body Language track "Holiday" (sans all the nonsense from the BBC Radio 1 rip).
Fresh out the oven, Enjoi!

"It’s a relatively difficult tempo to work with, so I just made it a little new wave. Lots of piano and guitar. A bit inspired by Ryuichi Sakamoto’s piano work. Well.. most of my music is." - RAC

Body Language - Holiday (RAC Mix) by RAC

Bring Me The Horizon - "Diamonds Aren't Forever" & "Chelsea Smile"

I miss this shit. BMTH are British and currently touring the world, these two tracks are both off of their second album 'Suicide Seasons', on Visible Noise and Epitaph Records. The remix of "Chelsea Smile" that comes with the iTunes album is ridiculous, and so are both of the videos . I've had this album on for days.

BMTH - "Diamonds Aren't Forever"

BMTH - "Chelsea Smile"
BMTH - "Chelsea Smile (KC Blitz remix)"

Caravan Palace - "La Caravane"

Coming in on the airwaves over from Paris is some electro-swing by Caravan Palace. "La Caravane" is the last track off of their self-titled debut album, 'Caravan Palace'. They are a full band, no samples here, which makes this all the better.

11.11.2011

Volta Cab - "Always In The Place (Demo)"

In Mother Land, deep cosmic space disco listens to you! Volta Cab is synth-lover Konstantyn, and here he describes what's happening. Check out his newest demo below, as well as classics below that.

"Volta Cab comes from Mother Russia and brings us into the neon future. Into the times where space rockets are the most widespread type of transport. Into the times where teachers at your child's' school are Martians and the chief-cooks of your favourite restaurant are from Mercury. Into the times when the war is over and everyone in the universe loves one another in the interstellar dance to the synth pop music heavily influenced by the 1980's pop-culture."
- Konstantyn

Railroad Earth - "Casey Jones (12.31.09)"

Starting off a cold, fall day on the right foot. NJ natives Railroad Earth have done some great Dead covers in the past, especially this version of "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo". Here they close out their first set on NYE 2009 with a spot-on version of "Casey Jones", at Portland's Alladin Theatre. RRE also just released Retrospective: 2001-2009, a collection of 20 previously unreleased soundboard recordings of shows from 01' - 09'.
There doesn't seem to be any tapes from this night, at least that I can find, but nugs.net has the show available for purchase here.

AN21 and Max Vangeli - BBC 1 Essential Mix

This is by far the most essentially essential Essential mix I've heard in a blue moon. Almost 2-hours of progressive Swedish House bliss.
Courtesy of the brothers at PB&J, jump over there to check out the track listing and listen immediately.

Drop Out Orchestra

Drop Out Orchestra are from Skane, Sweden, apparently never show anyone their eyes, and are well known for churning out the classic disco grooves. Their remixes of the Ark's "Breaking Up With God (Dub)" and Flight Facilities "Foreign Languages" are already up here, but here's more because these dudes get it moving.

Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop (Drop Out Orchestra Rework) by Drop Out Orchestra

Yonder Mountain String Band - "Sand (Phish cover)"

Holy shit they've done it again. Sometimes I wish Yonder would just cover all of the music I listen to. This is the first time they've ever covered "Sand", the debut occurred at Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival in Alta, WY.
If you torrent, enjoy the whole show below via archive.org, courtesy of Russ Minas. The "Shady Grove" encore is two-thumbs up.

EOTO - Halloween Sampler (Lawrence, KS 10.31.11)

For any who don't know, EOTO is a disturbed duo of men with experience in various parts of the electronic, jam, dubstep, trip-hop and D&B scenes. This is a quick three song sampler from EOTO's Horrifying Halloween Bass Face Bash in Lawrence, KS.
I recently met Jason Hann behind a row of port-a-potties over the summer at Electric Forest and can confirm that, in fact, he is this scary in real life.
For more songs from the show, click on over to their soundcloud.

Mickey Moonlight - Live in Lemuria (Full DJ Set)

A great live set from new Ed Banger resident oddity Mickey Moonlight. It's sweet-disco house-funk from outer space, check out the throw-back Aphex Twin remix towards the end of the set. He really loves Rustie.

Say Anything - "Admit It!!!"

Truer words were never spoken, thank you Say Anything. A song about me and every hypocrite I've ever met, three cheers for full iTunes shuffle.

Inspired Flight - "Wonderwall (Remix)"

A lot of remixes get put up on here, but very rarely does a one take on a life of it's own and become something closer to an original tune. Inspired Flight is a trip-hop/electronic/ambient/dub gang from San Diego, and they blend samples from Radiohead, Bob Marley, Simian, Blur and the Postal Service to create an entirely new version of the Oasis original. A while back someone sent me "It's The Chemicals", featuring Scarub of Living Legends fame, and I was immediately hooked on their music.
Get a free download of "Wonderwall" and check out the rest of 'We All Want to Fly'.

Wonderwall Remix by Inspired Flight

We All Want To Fly by Inspired Flight

Brazilian Girls - "Good Time (Ki:Theory Remix)"

Ki:Theory is Joel Burleson, a Richmond, VA resident who has been making music since the early 00's. He's remixed the likes of Daft Punk, Kings of Leon, UNKLE and Queens of the Stone Age, and adds a uniquely groovy lo-fi touch to whatever tracks he's working on. His own stuff ranges from Ratatat-esque beats to melodic guitar work- it's perfect material to zone out to.
Check out his website for free downloads of both his Remix EP's and all of his own tracks, they're great.

Flight Facilities - "Foreign Language (Drop Out Orchestra Remix)"

Drop Out Orchestra adds an extra 10% to the already 100% groove-ness of this song.

11.02.2011

Gotye - "Somebody I Used to Know ft. Kimbra (Loot & Plunder Remix)"

Gotye is Australian tech-nut Wally de Backer. Besides the female vocals on the latter half of the track, contributed by Kimbra, all instrumentals and vocals are his. And yes, he does sound a lot like Sting. This remix by fellow Aussies Loot & Plunder makes the song a bit more fluid, but the original is unbeatable. Plus, the video is cool as hell.

Highlights from 2011

10.17.2011

Broken Social Scene -"Good Times Are Killing Me w/ Isaac Brock" & "Paper Thin Walls w/ Isaac Brock"

Oh yeah? Ohhhhh yeah. Live at the Sound Academy in Toronto, 28/11/08. Sounds so good with BSS.

10.14.2011

Something A La Mode - "5 AM (La Tourette Remix)"

Something A La Mode is Thomas Roussel & Yannick Grandjean. "5 AM" is from their 2009 album 'SALM', and the remix by La Tourette is perfect night time driving music. La Tourette has remixed everyone under the sun, check out his soundcloud for more disco-house thingys.

Mickey Moonlight - "This Son"

This starts a sunny Friday off right. Mickey Moonlight, aka Mike Silver, is a U.K based producer and DJ/Remixer who was just picked up by the Ed Banger family. "Pelu Tolo" has a similar feel, just solid sunny island disco tunes.

The Grateful Dead - "Brown Eyed Women"

"Brown eyed women and red grenadine
the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down

and it looks like the old man's getting on"

One of the classics. The video version is from 5/88/77 in Ithica, NY; the Furthur version is from All Good Festival, 2nd set 2009; the Playin' in The Band version is from 'Comes A Time: A Tribute to Jerry Garcia' live album at the Greek Theatre in Berkley, 9-24-2005. Unreal lineup. The version of "Brown Eyed Women" has Trey on vocals.

Playin' In The Band features:
Bob Weir - guitar, vocals
Billy Kreutzmann - drums
Mickey Hart - percussion
Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay - backup vocals
Bruce Hornsby - keyboards, vocals
Trey Anastasio - guitar, vocals
Warren Haynes - guitar, vocals
Jimmy Herring - guitar
Michael Kang - mandolin, fiddle (String Cheese Incident)
Jay Lane - drums (Ratdog)
Jeff Chimenti - keyboards (Ratdog)
Mark Karan - guitar (Ratdog)
Robin Sylvester - bass (Ratdog)
Kenny Brooks - saxophone (Ratdog)
Gloria Jones - backup vocals (JGB)
Jackie LaBranch - backup vocals (JGB)

Just Jack - "253"

I love everything this dude does. Just Jack, is as the name suggests, just one guy named Jack. Jack Christopher Allsop is a Camden Town, London native and has been making music since 2007. He grew up as an amateur break dancer and at 15 dove into the electronic scene. This is off 'All Night Cinema' from 2009. Sometime in 2011 he is set to release his 4th album, tentatively titled 'Sexy R'n'B'. Can't wait.

Kid Loco - "Confessions (Parov Stelar remix)"

Some great funky jams to keep the clouds away on a rainy day. Kid Loco (AKA Papa Loco, Kid Bravo) is French DJ / remixer / producer, and Parov Stelar is an Austrian DJ and producer best known for the unreasonable amount of his songs / remixes featured on Buddha Bar and various Lounge compilations.
Grooves below.

Dj Shadow - 'The Less You Know, The Better'

"I'm back. I forgot my drums..."

Senor Shadow is back with the recently released 'TLYKTB'. It is a flawless 19-track journey through the mind of a music fiend. He seamlessly weaves through dozens of genres, pulling samples from the darkest corners of the record shop. I still haven't heard anyone else who can create music like this, it's like hip-hops answer to 'An American Prayer'.
Check out the video of him premiering "Redeemed" at Rockwave festival in Greece last year.

And then support good hip-hop and buy the album.

The Less You Know, The Better

K-OS - "On The Run ft. Saukrates"

Best use of a Phantom Planet song, for sure. I still can't figure out if this song is also called "I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman", but Canadian hero K-OS and Saukrates rap a good story, and the video plays out like an awesome 4-minute long version of Pulp Fiction. It get's a little weird towards the end though.

K-OS - "On The Run ft. Saukrates"

10.04.2011

Casiokids - 'Aabenbaringen over aaskammen'

Or if you're not fluent in Norwegian, 'The Revelation over the Mountain'. Each song flows into the next via driving drums and too-smooth synth beats, broken apart by lyrics that I can not understand but are nevertheless great. A beautiful album overall.

Check out the free single below.

'Aabenbaringen over aaskammen' is set to be released October 11th, but Casiokids were kind enough to release a full stream of the album through Consequence of Sound.

Lera Lynn -"Wolf Like Me"

I'm under the impression that Bluegrass versions of anything are always good, if not better than the original song. Athens, GA based Lera Lynn does TVOTR justice with this great cover of "Wolf Like Me".

Hammock

If you like epic, flowing instrumental ambient ballads that come seemingly out of thin air, you'll love Hammock. Deep down south thur in Nashville, Tenursee this prolific duo makes music that probably falls under the category of post-rock, but sounds a lot more like the soundtrack to nature. They have a boatload of sets and mixes on Soundcloud, and some really well shot videos.
Check out the video for "Moon No Aware", and give their 'Longest Year' E.P a listen below.

10.02.2011

Rostam - "Wood"

Somewhere in between Ravi Shankar, The Darjeeling Limited soundtrack, and pre-Roman folklore is Rostam. The name "Rostam" actually has roots in Persian / Asian mythology, but that's neither here nor there. It's on Wikipedia. Rostam is the first name of Rostam Batmanglij, or "That guy who's involved in both Vampire Weekend and Discovery".
This is his newest song.

ROSTAM - Wood by ROSTAM

Maybe also listen to "Osaka Loop Line" or "Swing Tree" by Discovery.

9.27.2011

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - 'Sepulcros de Miel'

The album's title means 'Tombs of Honey', which is more or less what this is. A tomb of sweet, sticky honey jams produced by a few colorful bees. Sepulcros features Juan Alderete de la Pena and Marcel Rodriguez Lopez of Mars Volta fame, as well as John Fucking Frusciante. There are 8 tracks, and all the proceeds support the "Keep Music In Schools" program.
Get it for free, or donate any amount you'd like. Either way, probably listen to it.

Chris Weld - "Fall Mix"

Pure as the driven snow. Another awesome mix courtesy of PB&J co-owner Mr. Weld. If you like or have been listening to any decent electronic music in the last month, all of those songs and more are packaged here into one nice, neat, box of sound. The track listing is included on the Soundcloud, so read along and enjoy the aural sensations.
Included below is another dope radio mix for two stations in NY & DC from back in July.

Fuck yes? Fuck yes. Last week Lotus released it's 4th studio album, self-titled 'Lotus'. Stream the whole thing below, download the free track "The Surf" from RCRDLBL, and buy either the live set or the studio version.

9.22.2011

Dinka ft. Hadley & Danny Inzerillo - "Reach For Me (Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman Remix)"

I've never been to Yacht week, but I assume this is what it sounds like there all the time. Just this song on repeat. Then maybe that one remix of "Sweet Disposition", or something. Anyways, Dinka, Dimitri and Wyman come together awesomely on this song, it has a great SHM flavor.
Who doesn't love some airy female vocals over a fist-pumping bass? Communists, that's who.

Foster the People @ HOBOrlando

Two nights ago Foster the People stopped on their sold out tour to play the House of Blues in Orlando. Regrettably, we missed Reptar and the Cults open, but such is life. I'd heard "Pumped Up Kicks" about seven hundred times in the last month, but I didn't really appreciate the rest of 'Torches' until hearing it live. The show was nothing but high energy and good vibes, these guys really know how to play. What's even more impressive to me is that they've done a whole tour with nothing but one album's worth of material, and they've been killing it. If you can catch any of their shows, go forth and catch them. They are currently up east around PA, NJ and DC right now.

Dubset : DJ Defined Radio

Internet radio has come a long way from being something that kind of sucked to being something that is now awesome. Dubset just launched their beta, and I can easily see this becoming the accepted format for internet radio. Any DJ you are currently listening to puts their mixes and live sets up here. Live tracklisting allows you to identify and buy hard to find remixes.
Below is a great set by Orazio Rispo and John Dahlbeck.

Labor Day weekend was spent immersed in the Vice City's epic music scene. Highlight's included great disco and pop sets from Essential 6 and Mike Deuce at Grand Central, Triarchy closing at Wall, and Boris closing out the first night and well into the second afternoon of Space's weekend blowout with some heavy, tribal beats. Essential 6, Mike Deuce and Triarchy are all prominent DJ's in Miami, and Boris is a resident at both Space and PachaNYC.
Below are some hand-picked essential mixes, enjoi.
