Birthday Shenanigans

I celebrated my recent birthday with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, who have played basically every festival I've been to but I somehow still hadn't seen them. Shouldn't have waited so long. Beebs & Her Money Makers opened with some funky freestyle rap n' jazz, and then Dumpstaphunk got down N'Orleans style and the whole place was dancing like this guy.
The last few days have also brought much good music via the internet, mostly of the funk and house variety. BEHOLD, soundcloud links.

Justice - "On' n' On' (Ruined by Rick Rubin Remix)"
Busy P & the Justice bunch finally got to meet their childhood hero, and got a tongue twister of a remix out of him.

Magnum. - "Live Without You" - Mediafire
Magnum is a 26 year old producer / DJ stationed in Dublin. He's been making music for a few good years now, and this is his most recent release on . It's got an infectious progressive house sound, and I highly recommend this track. Head on over and parooz his Soundcloud and show some love!

World War Web

Our beloved internet is becoming a more serious place these days. Downloading and listening to great music, at least the way we all currently do it, is on the verge of becoming a pretty serious offense. SOPA & PIPA are shelved, but make no mistake, cloud-based sites like Mediafire can still pull the plug whenever they want- just ask the brothers over at PB&J.

However, it's too damn nice out today to not download and listen to some great music. Here's a collection of tracks inspired by the last 30 days of wandering around Central America and Southern Florida.

Hymn For Her - "Slips"
Caught these guys at a bar in Punta Gorda while fishing last weekend. Husband and wife duo, slide guitar, crazy hobo blues, great vocals. See the video.

The Grateful Dead - "Don't Ease Me In"
One of the best versions of this song ever, from the Early Show at the Filmore East, 1970-5-15. The intro and banter are great.

Tiger Army - "Outlaw Heart"
Psychobilly for the modern tumbleweed, Tiger Army Never Dies.

World/Inferno Friendship Society - "Velocity of Love"
Off of 'Red-Eyed Soul', Bridgewater, new joisey natives create vino inspired punk/cabaret/gypsy music. They're playing in Orlando on Febuary 11th, really don't be late.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - "Cut That Line"
Pure, 100% un-cut funky soul.

Professor Longhair - "Mardi Gras In New Orleans"
Some hip-swinging, finger snapping N'Orleans jazz courtesy of my Reddit Secret Santa.

Marco Benevento - "Record Book"
Off of his solo album 'Invisible Baby'. Beautiful, spacey piano rhythms. The version with Jon Fishman on drums is even better.

Beat Culture - "Tokyo Dreamer"
Off of 17-year old's second album, contains waves of glitchy and entrancing ambient noise. It's free and it's seriously fucking awesome.

Bonus:
DJ Omar Ali-Zadeh Sharif - "Occupy Ear Pussies"
A wonderfully titled debut mini-mix by Fordham based, NJ bred producer, featuring the best sort of progressive house and Rick Astley remixes.

Drop Out Orchestra - January 2012 Mix

Here's to ringing in the new year with some mixed up beat funk, con un poco latin flair. As I depart for Costa Rica in about 12 hours, this will be the soundtrack to the flight for sure.
Cheers and happy (belated) new year!
