J Mascis doesn't exactly come off as a happy dude. Behind the beautifully unreasonable guitar work are lyrics written by someone who seems to occupy a pretty lonely place in space and time, somewhere in between depression and inspiration. With that being said, this album deserves to be on repeat for a long time. Front to back, every song stands on it's own and then melts into the next without a hitch. Mascis brought in a bunch of friends to sonically contribute, adding some organ, clarinet, slide guitar, flute, lap steel and piano into the mix. "Several Shades of Why" and "Where You Are" are two of the most upbeat tracks, while "Can I" and "Is It Done" sound like old Dinosaur Jr. standards.
