I celebrated my recent birthday with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, who have played basically every festival I've been to but I somehow still hadn't seen them. Shouldn't have waited so long. Beebs & Her Money Makers opened with some funky freestyle rap n' jazz, and then Dumpstaphunk got down N'Orleans style and the whole place was dancing like this guy.

The last few days have also brought much good music via the internet, mostly of the funk and house variety. BEHOLD, soundcloud links.

In my mind, the fact that Clams Casino is from Nutley, NJ almost completley makes up for the existence of the Real Housewives and the cast of Jersey Shore. Coming from obscurity, he's made beats for a variety of rappers I usually don't listen to (Lil' B, Souljah Boy), but his production and style are too unique to pass up. Syrupy heavy bass, floating vocals, tribal-esque drums- all wrapped up in a dreamlike haze. These two instrumental tracks are enough to cause relaxation during even the most extreme of amphetamine-fueled studying binges.

I unwittingly went to their set at Rothbury and they scared the shit out of me. However, Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade have changed my mind. This is off of Live Frogs Set 2, which is Floyd's Animals album covered in it's entirety, described by Claypool himself as "more Pink Floyd than any human being should ever withstand."

This past Friday, Jeff Austin & Co announced their Cabin Fever tour for 2012. Gulf state residents, mid-westerners and southerners rejoice, for February 8th marks the beginning of the 20-show Yonder Bender. The tour includes a 5 night stop in Flo-rida, with their annual Orlando appearance on February 16th. Unfortunately they've switched to a larger venue (The Beacham, as opposed to The Social), but oh well.

Starting off a cold, fall day on the right foot. NJ natives Railroad Earth have done some great Dead covers in the past, especially this version of "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo". Here they close out their first set on NYE 2009 with a spot-on version of "Casey Jones", at Portland's Alladin Theatre. RRE also just released Retrospective: 2001-2009, a collection of 20 previously unreleased soundboard recordings of shows from 01' - 09'.
There doesn't seem to be any tapes from this night, at least that I can find, but nugs.net has the show available for purchase here.

Inspired Flight is a trip-hop/electronic/ambient/dub gang from San Diego, and they blend samples from Radiohead, Bob Marley, Simian, Blur and the Postal Service to create an entirely new version of the Oasis original. A while back someone sent me "It's The Chemicals", featuring Scarub of Living Legends fame, and I was immediately hooked on their music.

Two nights ago Foster the People stopped on their sold out tour to play the House of Blues in Orlando. Regrettably, we missed Reptar and the Cults open, but such is life. I'd heard "Pumped Up Kicks" about seven hundred times in the last month, but I didn't really appreciate the rest of 'Torches' until hearing it live. The show was nothing but high energy and good vibes, these guys really know how to play. What's even more impressive to me is that they've done a whole tour with nothing but one album's worth of material, and they've been killing it. If you can catch any of their shows, go forth and catch them. They are currently up east around PA, NJ and DC right now.

Sometimes, one may ask, "What's good?". My reply would be that this is good. The Mother Hips have been rocking and rolling in the Bay area for almost 20 years. Both songs are off 'Kiss The Crystal Flake'. I realize I say this a lot, but the whole album is great. To commemorate 1/5 of a century worth of music, The Mother Hips are releasing a 4-disc box set entitled 'Days of Sun and Grass' which will feature an unreasonable amount of unreleased material, covers, b-sides, and demos.

That pretty much sums it up. This song never fails to put a smile on my face. This is off their album 'Songs From a Ghost Town', which is good, but 'Blue Sky and the Devil' is unbeatable if this is your jam.

Setting aside the 2 dozen other bands I saw this past weekend in the forest, I have to say that Cheese put on one of the best shows I've ever seen in mah lyfe. Simple as that. They were incredible. Someone with a really good camera caught the entire first night and just put it up on youtube in 12 parts, the sound quality is close to SBD. Setlist below, more videos to come.

So far this tour has been amazing, every show has been on par with New Years. They absolutely killed it last week at PNC, and again this weekend in Camden. Zeppelin and Hendrix classics, with a twist only Trey & Co. can provide.

Back sometime when it was cold and snowing in New Jersey, Reykjaviks own Of Monsters and Men released this song. Whenever I think of Iceland, I immediately think of either Sigur Ros or D2: The Mighty Ducks, so it's nice to hear something new from the area. Anyways, This song is too catchy.

Awwww yeah, new Barcelona. These guys are the happiest band in the world, it's infectious. These songs sound a lot more like the stuff on their first album, which is great because the last one was what is this I don't even.
